You can get the design software for free and I believe they'll do a run of any quantity but there are a two more hurdles with this idea. I got the Fritzing Fab idea from the personal hobby work I do with Arduino's. Now I have to figure out the best way of trying to manufacture a part, on my own or purchase it through something like Fritzing Fab. There are a variety of ways of going about the custom PCB route and having this adapter in hand at least allows me to get the measurements I need. That's what we really need here since that'll give us power and data. Create a custom PCB much like the eBay part I listed above to replace the current drive and provide an mSATA port instead of a SATA port. The pins in the slot are effectively unused once you use an adapter like this so it's possible if someone were good enough with a soldering iron or custom PCB then they could route power from the ASUS port to an external drive. It might be possible to disassemble an SSD and use the internals with some sort of power hijacked from the ASUS proprietary port.

The seller indicated the expected use is to essentially install it in a UX31 then leave the bottom half off effectively negating any portability which seems like an odd path to take. It will fit in the UX31 but there's really very little space left. The adapter doesn't supply power which really sucks but I expected that since it's only a standard SATA adapter. From what I can gather, the problem is the pin-outs from other drives don't match the proprietary connector from ASUS so if I can make one of these generic adapters (which do fit the connector) connect to something else by altering the board a little bit then I might have something. For me, I'm still holding out that I'll be able to find enough of these whacky Chinese parts to make something of my own that'll work. If you're desperate then that might be an option for you. I found a few vendors who were willing to sell new ADATA drives for the UX31 but they're pricey, from $300 - $400 depending on what size you got. I've purchased a couple of the SATA SSD HDD to 18pin as sandisk sd5se2/SDSA5JK ADATA XM11 for Asus UX31 adapters to see what I can come up with. Lenovo E530 Thinkpad – U100 16GB – Condusiv ExpressCacheĬongratulations to both SanDisk and Condusiv for a dynamic entry into the oem SSD disk caching market.I'm curious if you ever figured out a solution to your problem? I also have a UX31 with the crappy U100 which still works but it's just horribly slow.LGA540 Laptop – U100 8/16GB – Condusiv ExpressCache.LG Z430 Ultrabook – U100 16GB – Condusive ExpressCache.ASUS UX32 Ultrabook – iSSD 24GB – Condusiv ExpressCache.Fujitsu Lifebook U772 Ultrabook – iSSD 32GB – Condusiv ExpressCache.Announced at Computex today, the Fujitsu Lifebook U772, UH772 and UH552 models will all use the integrated SanDisk 32GB iSSD along side Condusiv technologies ExpressCache to deliver improved system performance.įor those who believed just a short time ago that Sandisk was out of the SSD game, you might be a bit surprised as a bit of investigative reporting resulted in this: The iSSD, as shown above, is just about the size of a penny. In speaking with SanDisk, they believe that the mSATA and hard drive will both be upgradeable, however, were very careful to point out that upgrading of the SSD may result in warranty concerns with Lenovo.įujitsu, on the other hand, will be introducing a new line of Ultrabooks in which the worlds smallest SSD, the SanDisk 32GB iSSD will finally be put to good use. Lenovo will be using the SanDisk 16GB mSATA U100 SSD and Condusiv Technologies ExpressCache software within their Thinkpad Edge E430 and E530 to provide a solution that retains the capacity of a hard drive, however, the performance of that hard drive is expected to be four times better. This was done through announcements of SanDisk with both Lenovo and Fujitsu. The opportunity to purchase a laptop with both the power of an SSD and the storage capacity of a hard drive has been some time in the making and, unexpectedly, this was brought to the forefront at Computex this morning by SanDisk in its partnership with Condusiv ExpressCache software. Word of an OEM disk caching solution has been the talk for some time and we had to wonder who would be the first and when, until today that is.
